Works have begun on a £3.5million project to make homes warmer and more energy efficient in the Carron Estate area of Springburn.
More than 500 families will benefit from the works which include: new insulated overcladding, new ‘A’ rated condensing boilers and radiators, replacement of electric heating in tenements with new efficient gas heating systems and free home energy advice.
Social landlord, North Glasgow Housing Association, has been in negotiations with Scottish Gas who are operating a community energy saving programme (CESP) to joint fund the project. Now the energy giant will organise and deliver a programme of housing improvements that will lead to lower carbon emissions and a reduction in heating bills for tenants and owners alike.
Work started on the 23rd April and is due to be complete by the end of October 2012. Tenants and owners were invited to an open day in February where they met with housing staff and representatives from Scottish Gas, A.C. Whyte and external insulation system manufacturer Alumasc. They were able to view images of how the houses in the area will look after the over-cladding work.
Chief Executive of North Glasgow Housing Association, Robert Tamburrini, said: “This is another great project and a further demonstration of our commitment to maintain and improve the quality of housing in our area.
“Tenants and owners alike will benefit greatly from the improvements in the short and long term.
“The changes in appearance will be almost instant and the subsequent savings in energy costs will prove very helpful in the years ahead.”
A spokesperson for A.C. Whyte said: “As a company we have been undertaking works of this nature for over 25 years and are delighted to be working in partnership with Scottish Gas and North Glasgow Housing Association to deliver such a significant project that will dramatically improve the homes in the Carron area and benefit the community as a whole.”
Steve Gapik, CESP Manager for Scottish Gas, said: “Residents can expect a real transformation over the coming months. North Glasgow Housing Association and Scottish Gas are investing substantially to improve homes in the area, installing an insulated cladding render which will give homes a fresh new appearance whilst also making them warmer.
“Coupled with the new gas heating systems being installed these improvements will make a real difference, making homes more energy efficient, more comfortable to live in and potentially lowering heating bills significantly.”
North Glasgow HA was named Sustainable Business of the Year at the Grow Green Awards last month at the People’s Palace, seeing off competition from Clyde Gateway and Clydesdale Bank.
The properties included in the works are located in Carbisdale Street, Carron Crescent, Carron Place, Carron Street, Eccles Street, Fernbank Street and Springburn Road.
