Some career journeys start with a formal application. Ewan Murray’s started with a bike ride.
While cycling near his home in Coatbridge, Ewan spotted one of our live retrofit sites. Curious and determined, he made a bold move – he walked straight into the site office and asked to speak with the Site Manager, Alex Neil, to find out what it would take to get a job in construction.
That initiative paid off. Impressed by Ewan’s enthusiasm, Alex contacted our HR team and arranged a 4-week work placement. During that time, Ewan made a lasting impression – demonstrating a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a professional attitude that stood out across the team.
The result? A full-time job as a labourer. And after just four months of continued dedication, Ewan was offered an apprenticeship in plumbing and gas – a decision supported by our senior management team who had taken note of his potential.
Now, with two years of college under his belt, Ewan is on track to complete his third year by June 2026 – and continues to shine.

Tommy Campbell, our Skills Academy Principal, commented:
“Ewan is very appreciative of the opportunity, and continues to develop by learning from colleagues around him. He has the desire to go as far as he can with AC Whyte.”
Julie Rankin, SNIPEF Training Officer, added:
“Lecturers at South Lanarkshire College say it’s a pleasure to teach Ewan. He’s polite, enthusiastic, and supportive with his peers – with excellent timekeeping and ability. He’s a real asset to AC Whyte.”
Ewan’s journey is a brilliant example of what can happen when opportunity meets determination. We’re proud to be part of his path and look forward to what’s next for him.
