At AC Whyte, we’re passionately committed to nurturing young people into rewarding careers in construction and there’s no better example of that commitment than the work of our Skills Academy Principal Tommy Campbell.

Tommy’s dedication to engaging young people with the construction industry has been nothing short of extraordinary. Through hands-on learning, inspiring conversations and meaningful mentorship, he has helped countless young people discover the breadth of exciting opportunities a career in construction can offer.

Tommy’s work extends across a wide range of initiatives designed to give young people genuine insight into construction and equip them with confidence, skills and direction.   Over the past 12 months, our engagement with young people has continued to grow in both reach and depth.

  • 35 bespoke careers and engagement events delivered across schools, industry programmes and partner initiatives providing immersive, real-world insight into construction.
  • Over 25 structured work placements and site-based engagement opportunities, giving young people hands-on exposure to our projects, our people and the realities of working within the industry.
  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring for our own apprentices, alongside valued support for apprentices connected to our client partnerships.

This sustained level of engagement reflects our commitment not only to raising awareness, but to creating genuine pathways into construction.

None of this work happens in isolation. Our engagement with young people is strengthened by a network of partners who share our commitment to developing future talent.  From clients, local schools and education partners to industry bodies who actively support sustainable workforce development.  These relationships reflect not just shared purpose, but real and practical collaboration.

Tommy has always believed that seeing is believing. By giving young people real, hands-on experience, supported by trust and encouragement, he’s helping them imagine themselves within an industry that’s vital to Scotland’s future.

“Construction offers incredible opportunities, especially in the green sector. When we give young people real experiences, honest guidance and clear pathways, they see what’s possible and that’s when confidence and ambition start to grow.”

– Tommy Campbell, AC Whyte

Our work with young people is a commitment to the long-term health of the construction industry in Scotland. As we collectively strive to meet ambitious targets for housing, net-zero delivery and infrastructure, the need for skilled, motivated young people has never been greater.

Through partnership, passion and purposeful action, we are helping to build not just skills, but careers, confidence and futures.

Together with our partners, we’re proud to be shaping the next generation of construction professionals one session, one conversation and one young person at a time.
