AC Whyte is proud to continue supporting the next generation of skilled tradespeople through our ongoing partnership with East Ayrshire Council.

Recently, our team had the opportunity to work closely with East Ayrshire’s 4th year plastering apprentices, helping them complete a key component of their course — roughcasting work — and demonstrate their competence through their e-portfolios.

Our Skills Academy Principal, Tommy Campbell, led the initiative, carrying out a full site induction with the apprentices, including health and safety briefings, and ensuring each apprentice was fully equipped with AC Whyte PPE.

Working alongside Kevin Mitchell, East Ayrshire’s Apprentice Development Officer, Tommy designed tailored onsite activities to suit each apprentice’s individual learning needs and ensure their progress was fully documented for their apprenticeship portfolio.

Refining Their Craft

Three apprentices took part in the programme, working exceptionally well as a team onsite.

Under Tommy’s supervision, they gained valuable hands-on experience, refined their roughcasting skills, and strengthened their understanding of high-quality workmanship.

Together, Tommy and Kevin have developed a structured programme of activity that will continue to support apprentices in gaining real-world site experience while enhancing their technical ability.

This initiative is a strong example of AC Whyte’s partnership approach with local authorities — fostering skills development, supporting young people within their communities, and helping to build a sustainable future for the construction industry.

Project Context

This collaboration took place as part of the ongoing East Ayrshire Council Kilmarnock project, which includes improvements to 72 properties in its first phase, with additional properties and an increased project duration in the pipeline.

Works include roofing, rendering, cavity wall insulation, and the installation of external doors and windows.

The project is managed by David Higgins, who brings extensive experience working on East Ayrshire projects and is himself a trained roughcaster — bringing valuable technical expertise to the team.

AC Whyte are proud to continue building strong relationships with our partners and investing in the future of Scotland’s skilled workforce.
